D6 Organizing Initiative Update #7

As you know, we rolled out our District 6 Organizing Initiative in January during the District 6 Conference in El Paso.  Since that time, many Locals have been working to make face-to-face contacts with non-members.  Some Locals have engaged in external organizing efforts as well.  I have periodically provided updates on some of the successes that Locals have achieved.  Below are a few of the highlights and notable efforts from the past four weeks.  Please note that, while the number of new members for some Locals listed below may not appear to be large, they are included here because they represent a significant percentage of the Local’s non-members.  Additionally, this is not a complete and comprehensive list of all organizing activities throughout the District.

Week of June 13

  • Local 6139 made face-to-face contacts with nine non-members, successfully signing up 5 of them.  Four of the new members work for Helena Labs and the other works for AT&T is a former member who dropped out during the escape period and has rejoined.
  • Local 6312 signed up 3 new members, all of whom also became COPE contributors.
  • Local 6313 organizers Patty Williams and Angie Fanning got signed membership cards from 48 AFP’s
  • Local 6508 brought 13 new members into the Union during the week.

Week of June 20

  • Local 6012 submitted names of over 30 new, previously unreported, members signed up in recent weeks.
  • Local 6016 submitted names of approximately 45 new, previously unreported, members they had signed up in recent weeks.
  • Local 6206 organizer Rachael Borrego signed up 4 non-members working for AT&T Mobility.
  • Local 6229 VP and organizer, Jose Cantu, engaged in the external organizing campaign at T-Mobile, hand billing two days at the Brownsville and Mission, TX call centers.  Jose then went to Mexico City to assist a sister Union in Mexico as they were heading into a representation election.
  • Local 6300 signed up 11 new members from various bargaining units.  This Local also continued their fine work on several active external campaigns that they are engaged in.
  • Local 6733 brought 14 new members into the CWA family.

Week of June 27

   ·       Local 6132 signed up a total of 14 new members during the week – two AT&T non-members and twelve newly hire Mobility employees.

·      Local 6229 continued their efforts to gain the trust of Mobility employees working in retail stores by making regular visits to talk them.  These efforts are beginning to pay dividends as the Local was able to get 6 long time non-members to sign up.

·      Local 6402 organizers made face-to-face contacts with twenty-seven AT&T non-members, successfully getting 12 of them to sign membership cards.  Three of them also became COPE contributors.

·      Local 6508 signed up 15 more new members during the week.

·      Local 6733 continued to build onto their past organizing success by bringing 13 more new members into the CWA family.

Week of July 4

·         Local 6016 grew their Local with 21 new member sign-ups.  Nine of these new members also signed up to become COPE contributors.

·         Local 6143 added 16 new workers to their membership list, seven of whom also became COPE contributors.

·         Local 6203 organizers signed up 3 new members.  One of them is a former member who has now rejoined after dropping out during the last escape window.

·         Local 6401 signed up 3 new members during the week with two of them signing COPE cards as well.

·         Local 6402 got signed membership cards from 4 new members, one of whom also signed a COPE card.

·         Local 6507 found success by signing up 8 new members during the week.

·         Local 6508 signed up 4 more new members.

·         Local 6733 brought 5 more members into their Local.

Again, these are only a few of the success stories that Locals have experienced in the past few weeks.  It is not intended to be an all-inclusive list of organizing activities and successes across the District.

Your ongoing organizing efforts are appreciated as we all continue to work to build our Union.
