Bargaining Report #1
Bargaining Committee representatives of KCUR and Classical KC radio stations, along with leaders of CWA Local 6360 and CWA Representative Gerald Murray, convened with University of Missouri-Kansas City representatives on July 23, 2025, to initiate contract negotiations.
Attendees included:
Union Bargaining Team: Tom Gebken, Darrick Inscho, Halle Jackson, Gerald Murray (Chair), and Sam Zeff
University Representatives: Jodie Lewis, Melinda Adams, Antwaun Smith, Christen Melvin, Mike Kammerer, Tom Bachmann, and Megan Gonzalez
During the session, the CWA bargaining committee confirmed that unit representatives (Jackson and Zeff) will engage in on-the-clock bargaining during regular working hours, mirroring the approach taken in the St. Louis Public Radio negotiations.
The committee also sought clarification on the stations' financial standing to inform the bargaining process. There were no updates provided regarding the separation of KCUR/Classical KC from the university, nor any information concerning potential layoffs.
A request for a detailed, line-item budget for KCUR and Classical KC was made. While the University believes the general manager is forthcoming with budgetary information, unit members will pursue a Sunshine Law request to ensure its acquisition.
The CWA bargaining committee also requested updates on the timeline for KCUR and Classical KC's separation from the university, with the University promising further details in the near future.
The next meeting will be a full-level bargaining session. Our objective is to secure a contract prior to any potential sale. The date for the next meeting will be announced later.
In Solidarity,
Your Bargaining Committee
