Statement of Claude Cummings, Jr. on the Supreme Court’s Decision to Uphold Trump’s Travel Ban
This week’s Supreme Court decision to uphold President Trump’s travel ban is a major setback for all of those fighting for the implementation of just immigration laws and our nation as a whole. There is no question this ban originated from sheer religious and racial animosity preached by Trump and his surrogates since before the election. We are deeply dismayed and appalled by the Supreme Court’s majority decision to ignore Trump’s anti-Muslim rhetoric and uphold a proclamation camouflaged by so-called national security reasons.
Trump’s discriminatory proclamation will ban nationals of five majority-Muslim countries including those with family members in America from entering the U.S and seeing their loved ones. It will also prevent those fleeing danger from seeking refuge. Furthermore, the Supreme Court’s ruling will undoubtedly put our Muslim brothers and sisters at greater risk by validating islamophobia and emboldening hate groups.
Unfortunately, the President’s hateful proclamation is just another addition to a series of divisive policies of this Administration’s broader immigration narrative. We cannot stand by and let this inhumane policy undermine our foundational values of religious equality. The Communications Workers of America is proud to represent a wide range of workers with diverse backgrounds including religion, race, sexuality and gender identity. In the wake of this disappointing ruling, we should all come together and reiterate our commitment to fighting for a more just and inclusive society.
