Honoring Our Convention Committee Members & Delegates: Charting CWA’s Path Forward
Dear District 6 Convention Committee Members, Delegates, Members, and Guests:
I want to start by thanking all of our District 6 Convention Committee members who accepted the duty to serve on our constitutional committees.
Their jobs weren't easy, but they represented District 6 with distinction, integrity, and honor. Each one of them took their duties seriously and worked to ensure that our Convention ran well.
This Convention addressed several items that will guide our union for the next two years.
I also want to thank the District 6 Delegates for taking your role in shaping the direction of our union seriously, with the shared goal of setting CWA up for continued success. From lowering the floor of the MRF, to adding a Passenger Services representative to the DFOC, to engaging in robust and thoughtful debate on the stance our Union should take regarding the horrible atrocities taking place in Gaza—you, the highest governing body in CWA, should be proud. I am proud of each and every one of you and extremely honored to be part of this union. CWA’s democratic process is truly a beautiful thing. The idea of working-class people coming together to express their wants, aspirations, and vision for the future is rare and sacred.
It would be easy to avoid struggle, to shy away from disagreement, or to see our debates as combat—as if we were enemies. But that’s not who we are in CWA. We embrace our democracy and diversity of opinion as strengths. We see them as opportunities to learn from different perspectives and to emerge stronger because of them.
As I have said many times, I love this union! I'm so very proud to be a part of it, and to be in this fight with each of you, for workers’ economic power, respect, and equality.
We still have a lot of work to do. We have big challenges to face. As leaders, we'll never be perfect, but as long as we continue to build people up, put our members first, and understand that our sacrifices as leaders are the building blocks to create a powerful union, we help create a better world.
I want to leave you with a challenge: Talk about this Convention with your members. Share with them the environment in which the labor movement finds itself today. Ask them to join you in building the strongest union possible to help us fight, and win together!.
Thank you again. We appreciate you all, so deeply.
In Solidarity,
Derrick Osobase Sr.
